Next Generation Color MFDs Closing in on Black & White Price

The next generation of business color MFDs from both Savin and Toshiba are now very close in price to black and white models, and they have all of the same advanced options like scan to e-mail and faxing.   The first color digital copiers – called creative color copiers - now over 10 years old, were slow, very expensive to purchase run, and required intricate micro computers called color controllers that monitored the copy process. The cost per copy from these machines ran from $.25 to $.50 per page, and black and white output was far too expensive for office copy use.  The copies from creative color copiers, though, do allow a quite exact color match to the original document or electronic file.

Starting almost 4 years ago with the Savin 2408/3210 models a new concept called business color came into being. Priced about 20% higher than comparable speed b/w only machines one of these units could be placed on the network and replacing a color laser printer.  The benefits were increased speed compared to most inexpensive color laser printers or ink jets, prints up to 11X17 in size, a cost per copy for full color of around a dime a page compared to as much as a dollar on the printers, and at the same time having a fully functional black and white copy machine with essentially the same cost per page.  This family of machines, still being made today as the 2410 Savin makes 24 pages per minute in b/w and 10 in color.  Toshiba has just introduced more powerful versions of this engine style with speeds of 28, 35, and 45 in b/w and with all three models making 11 cpm in full color.  Color copy quality is excellent, and more than adequate for essentially all normal business purposes.  The level of exact color matching, though, is not as high as on the far more expensive creative color units.

The reason for the great disparity in b/w and color speeds is that all these units require one revolution of the drum for each color applied compared to just one for black.  Savin now makes advanced business color MFDs that have 4 drums.  These are a little more expensive than the single drum units, but have relative b/w and color speeds like 28/24, 35/28, 45/35 and even up to a new 60/45 unit that offers a color unit with the speed and power of a black and console (you can view or download a full color brochure on the Savin C6045 right here - this link may take a minute, so please be patient).   PCCI has been marketing these engines since their introduction in printer only configuration four years ago.
